One of the most ancient forms of Surfing - Stand up Paddle surfing can be traced back to the early days of Polynesia. Stand up Paddle surfing recent history dates back to Hawaii in the 1940s, when the surf instructors would use stand up paddle surfing to spot the incoming sets, and keep their clients camera's dry ! As the Surf Industry grew with its huge range of boards, fashion and market presence, the Paddle was all but lost except for the few Hardcore on the Hawaiian Shores.
In the new millennium the paddle started to make its return, championed by some of the most famous watermen in the world including Laird Hamilton and Gerry Lopez, they were using the paddle to increase fitness and prepare for the big tow in days, they also realised Stand Up Paddle surfing was adding new skills and offering different experiences to normal Surfing.
In the past two years Stand up Paddle surfing has really got going, with the major shaping house's taking a keen interest and combining their skills and modern technology to offer lightweight large boards which can be maneuvered all around the wave. Carbon Fibre paddles were introduced which again cut weight but increased paddling speed. Stand Up Paddling has revolutionized the Surfing world, with the realisation that you don't have to wait for the next swell, to be out doing what you love most.
Stand Up Paddle surfing, can be peaceful, as you paddle on the Flat water, whether its on the Ocean, or your Local River or Lake, but will still give you that major rush as you start to catch waves or attempt more challenging Rivers. Stand Up Paddle Surfing is the perfect workout giving you a whole body and core work out, making you stronger and fitter for those major surf sessions.
